Estill Steam Furnace Ruins

Overview

Estill Steam Furnace was constructed around 1830 by Thomas Deye Owings, a prominent figure in Kentucky’s early iron industry. Unlike many charcoal furnaces that relied on water power, this furnace used a steam-powered air blast. It processed local iron ore with charcoal and limestone to produce pig iron, which was then made into finished goods at nearby forges and rolling mills. The furnace operated into the late 19th century and is now represented by historic ruins in the Estill County area. The original furnace site is on privately owned land within the broader Daniel Boone National Forest region.
