Fitchburg Furnace was built in 1868 near the former industrial community of Fitchburg. The furnace used charcoal and a steam-powered air blast to produce iron, including material used for railroad wheels and rails. Its twin sandstone stacks form a remarkable historic structure approximately 115 feet long, 40 feet wide, and 65 feet high. The furnace was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. Visitors can explore the historic site and interpretive area while respecting forest regulations and protecting the ruins.
